This simple, 2 ingredient DIY facial exfoliator cleansing grains recipe gently exfoliates while brightening your skin and helping to reduce facial flaws.
In case you are not familiar, cleansing grains are usually referred to as a powdered facial cleanser/exfoliator that uses a variety of natural and powdered ingredients. There are a variety of things you can use to make cleansing grains including different types of flours, clays, oats, and herbs, along with other powdered ingredients.
To keep things simple, the cleansing grains recipe I am showcasing here uses only two ingredients that are very powerful and full of skin improving benefits.
Cleansing Grains Recipe
2 parts brown or white rice flour
1 part orange peel powder
Empty, clean spice bottle with shaker top.
This DIY facial exfoliator is so simple to make just combine two parts of the rice flour with one part orange peel powder in a container and mix or shake well. The best container to use is an empty, clean (and preferably glass) spice bottle. If you have one that you can reuse that is the best option, if not they can be purchased here.
How to use Cleansing Grains
As simple as this cleansing grains recipe is to make, it is even simpler to use. Just sprinkle about a teaspoon of the mixture into the palm of your freshly washed hand. Then add just a little bit of water (or you could use another liquid, like aloe) to the mixture. You want to add just enough liquid to make it a paste-like consistency.
Apply the paste directly to your face, gently rubbing into your skin before rinsing clean. If wearing makeup, this mixture is best applied after the makeup is removed. You can either rinse your face clean right away or let it sit on your skin for up to 20 minutes, giving your skin time to soak up the skin beautifying benefits of these wonderful ingredients. I like to leave on for a few minutes while I brush my teeth and floss before rinsing the mixture off. I recommend using it one to three times a week based on skins needs. As with any facial, exfoliator you do not want to overdo it.
*It is always a good idea to do a patch test before using any product to see how your skin reacts. This is especially important if you have more sensitive skin.
Cleansing Grains Benefits
There are so many skin-improving benefits to this facial cleansing grains recipe.
It is a natural, gentle exfoliator that will not cause micro-tears to the skin like some facial scrubs can. Micro-tears are small tears in the skin that make the skin more prone to environmental damage. Since the skin on the face is so delicate, you never want to use anything too abrasive on it. Stay away from salt and sugar on facial skin as they can be too rough. They are, however, fine to use on your body where your skin is less delicate. Never use powdered walnut shells as they are much too abrasive for any skin type and can accelerate aging. There have even been lawsuits against St. Ives for using these ingredients in their products.
This cleansing grains recipe is also a healthy, nontoxic exfoliator that does not contain microbeads or other chemicals that can harm the environment. Although microbeads are in the process of being phased out, they are not completely removed from products yet so they are something you still need to look out for.
This DIY exfoliator stores well and does not need refrigeration due to its stable ingredients and the fact that you do not add liquid until you are ready to use.
There are many other benefits to this exfoliator based on the two primary ingredients used.
