Brittany, the amazing YouTuber from the YouTube channel VasseurBeauty, recently did another cleaning video where she cleaned her entire house using Rosemary Lavender All Purpose Cleaner from my book Easy Green Cleaning.
Check out her video for some great cleaning motivation and tips and consider subscribing while you are there.
Brittany has always been great at showing healthier solutions when it comes to cleaning. She does a great job in the video showing how pretty much everything in your home can be cleaned using the Rosemary Lavender All Purpose Cleaner and cleans everything except her floors using the cleaner. When cleaning her hardwood floors she used the Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner and Bona Hardwood Floor Polish. Bona is a very popular product and recommended frequently by hardwood dealers and many in the industry. It is also stated on their website that it is GREENGUARD certified, non-toxic and safe so most people feel really comfortable using it on their floors believing it is not doing any harm.
Is Bona hardwood floor cleaner really that safe?
I think that question is up for debate. I would not personally recommend the Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner as it rates an F in the Environmental Working Groups Cleaning Product Data Base. For those of you that are not familiar with the Environmental Working Group (EWG), they are a consumer protection agency with a database where you can search certain products, in this case, cleaners. EWG breaks down all the ingredients showing their different toxicity levels to humans or the environment. An F score is the worst score a cleaning product can receive, meaning it contains many hazardous ingredients. Bona does have a Free & Simple version that rates a C in the EWG database. Although I prefer A or B ratings it is still a much safer option. The other question this poses for me is if their original version is so safe why did they need a Free and Simple version as well?
If you purchase products from the store instead of making your own, check them out using the EWG database as it is always a good idea to know what you are bringing into your home.
This post really is not about trashing Bona or the people who use it, especially not Brittany as she is someone who always promotes and shows healthier cleaning options. It is more to spark a conversation on what is truly safe when it comes to cleaning your home as there is so much Greenwashing that takes place in the cleaning industry. Bona being safe or not is inconclusive. I encourage people to do research and make the best decision for them and their home.
